Performance of the Conduction-cooled Ldx Levitation Coil

چکیده
The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) was developed to study plasma confinement in a dipole magnetic field. Plasma is confined in the magnetic field of a 680-kg Nb3Sn Floating Coil (F-coil) that is electromagnetically supported at the center of a 5-m diameter by 3-m tall vacuum chamber. The Levitation Coil (L-coil) is a 2800-turn, double pancake winding that supports the weight of the F-coil and controls its vertical position within the vacuum chamber. The use of high-temperature superconductor (HTS) Bi-2223 for the Lcoil minimizes the electrical and cooling power needed for levitation. The L-coil winding pack and support plate are suspended within the L-coil cryostat and cooled by conduction to a single-stage cryocooler rated for 25-W heat load at approximately 20 K. The coil current leads consist of conduction-cooled copper running from room temperature to 80 K and a pair of commercially-available, 150-A HTS leads. An automatically filled liquidnitrogen reservoir provides cooling for the coil's radiation shield and for the leads' 80-K heat stations. This paper discusses the L-coil system design and its observed cryogenic performance.

The Superconducting Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX)
The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) explores the physics of high-temperature plasmas confined by a dipole magnetic field. Stable high-beta plasma has been created and confined by the magnetic field of a superconducting coil. Discharges containing trapped electrons form when microwaves cause strong perpendicular heating at cyclotron resonance. To eliminate the losses to the supports, the magne...

The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) is an innovative approach to explore the magnetic confinement of fusion plasmas. A superconducting solenoid (floating coil) is magnetically levitated for up to 8 hours in the center of a 5-meter diameter vacuum vessel. This coil is supported by a Levitating Coil (L-Coil) on top of the vacuum vessel. In the initial machine design, this Levitating Coil was a ...

We present a comprehensive experimental investigation of a micromachined inductive suspension (MIS) based on 3D wire-bonded microcoils. A theoretical model has been developed to predict the levitation height of the disc-shaped proof mass (PM), which has good agreement with the experimental results. The 3D MIS consists of two coaxial wire-bonded coils, the inner coil being used for levitation, w...
متن کاملActive Magnetic Bearing Online Levitation Recovery through -Synthesis Robust Control
A rotor supported on active magnetic bearings (AMBs) is levitated inside an air gap by electromagnets controlled in feedback. In the event of momentary loss of levitation due to an acute exogenous disturbance or external fault, reestablishing levitation may be prevented by unbalanced forces, contact forces, and the rotor’s dynamics. A novel robust control strategy is proposed for ensuring levit...
